Moosewood Pasta with Chickpeas
As of late, I have not been using cookbooks that much.  Part of that is I haven’t been cooking as much, and the other part is that one of my favorite sites has been posting a lot of simple healthy (and vegetarian) recipes in the last couple months.  One of my new year’s resolutions is to bring my lunch more (or at least avoid sandwich shops), so when I tired of searching the web for...

Can I just say how happy it makes me that there’s a Brown on this list??  It’s this guy.  And he’s amazing.  (I guess Norah Jones is a brown, too — I never thought about that — we’re 40% of this list!).

The Year That Was And What Will Be
So 2011 was a strange year.  It was a year that I was simultaneously selfish and swept up in others’ lives.  I think for 2012, I will try to be less selfish, but I will also not allow others to dictate my existence.  This will be difficult, as I love the path of least resistance.  It’s so wide and smooth, and well taken.  But, I think with some maturity, I make my own road.  The theme...

When His Mistress Is Your Wife
This blog is amazing!  From just this post (click on “Read More” below): Can you feel the irony in the scene?  The Chamberlain is duped by the Duke but what’s sad is that he doesn’t appear to even recognize his wife’s naked body, which speaks to so many problems about their relationship.  Alas, that’s how thing were in the 14th century. wtfarthistory: Today’s painting by...

Woody Allen doc on PBS!  I know it’s gravely hypocritical of me, but where Roman Polanski squicks me out (I can’t see any of his newer films), Woody Allen doesn’t bother me.  I love his more recent films. I don’t love him so much (as you can see in the doc), but I like the movie version of himself — especially Owen Wilson in MiP, one of my favorite films of this...

Today
So this afternoon, a wonderful friend offered me a ride on the back of her scooter down to the “cool” part of town to go on a vintage shopping tour.  As we drove over the bridge, I spied a guy I had dated about 2 years or so ago.  He is a bit heavier and definitely lost a lot of hair.  He is the only honest-to-god through-and-through jerk I’ve ever gone out with.  So, I felt a...

Bree's Lentil-Tomato Soup From Cooking Light... →
Ok.  I am seriously cooking this weekend.  I cannot survive on pita chips and turkey sandwiches any longer.  Update: This came out ok.  I used a boxed chicken broth that gave no indication of its low sodiumness, but it was definitely not salty enough.  I had to add a lot in.  I think with a little doctoring, this could be pretty good.

Things that went through my head today:
1. Who out there in the universe actually likes Sun Chips? They are always the last thing to go in the vending machine, and yet, there they are, the selection slightly changing from harvest (yuck) to wild cheddar (double yuck). 2. I used the Matlab function for cumulative trapezoid rule and giggled.  Yes, I am 12 years old. (Google it!) I also later had a serious conversation with an older...

“What it comes down to is accepting the fact that many ideas and many solutions that we provide to our clients may always, or sometimes, fail. The trick, I think, is to A) accept it and B) have the courage to accept it and move forward with what you believe in.” ~ Rei Inamoto There are alot more ruminations about fear of failure here. from this conference. Most people’s messages...

So, I really need to unpack those moving boxes that have been in my house for 2 weeks… (Seriously, I made an enormous lentil stew the other day with just a dinner spoon.  I almost burned my hand.  I’m ambitious under constrained circumstances.  Too much freedom makes me lazy.)

Things I did on my 3 day trip to DC
Went to the movies. Rode in a Cadillac. Passed by Negro Mountain (!). Ate a Blizzard. Drove through 3 states and the District of Columbia. Visited Fallingwater — like a more conceptual, expensive, natural, beautiful version of my parents’ house. Stayed at the nexus of 3 rivers. Took Pittsburgh down — dudes can’t play dance music. Drank a gross martini. Drank an...

First Look Analysis of Deadly E. Coli in Germany →
An attempt at analyzing the sequence data of the most recent E. coli outbreak in Europe (the Spanish cucumber affair — true source still unknown). lindsayrobertson: “You’ll also be glad to know I have retained custody of the Captain’s hard-drinking gay friend, Max.” From the delightful “I Regret to Inform You That My Wedding to Captain Von Trapp Has Been Canceled,” by Melinda Taub, on McSweeney’s. Every “Sound of Music” fan will appreciate it.
